Johns Hopkins University seeks a patent counsel. This position is a terrific and unique opportunity to practice IP law in a premier academic setting.
Under the guidance of the Senior Patent Counsel, the candidate will be responsible for conducting IP legal aspects of JHU’s intellectual property assigned to the candidate. The vast majority of the IP responsibilities are patent-related primarily in the area of patent preparation and prosecution, in addition there may be work on opinions and assessments and client counseling. The candidate may assist in the management of relevant internal patent-related database(s), such as timekeeping, docketing and invention management systems. There will be a chargeable hours expectation for this position. The candidate will be responsible for submitting their chargeable time in a timely and accurate manner.
Experience:
After obtaining a USPTO Registration Number, a minimum 4 years of
experience preparing and prosecuting domestic and international patent
applications; providing patentability, validity, infringement and
inventorship assessments with a law firm, federal agency or
corporation. Some intellectual property licensing experience is
desirable. Candidates may meet this threshold of experience by
including work within a law firm or corporate IP legal department prior
to or while attending law school.
Education and Certification:
• A Bachelors degree, with Masters or Doctoral degrees strongly
preferred. Education and training in Life Science, pharmacy, medical
and biotechnology disciplines are particularly relevant; chemical,
engineering and or material science backgrounds will also be considered.
• J.D. degree, membership in a state bar (MD preferred).
• Must be registered to practice before the USPTO.
Reporting Relationships:
The position reports to the JHU Senior Patent Counsel, who in turn
reports to Executive Director of JHTT (or designee); the Senior Patent
counsel also has a “dotted line” reporting relationship to the JHU
General Counsel.
