Microsoft is seeking to hire an experienced patent attorney as a Patent
Portfolio Manager in Microsoft’s Server and Tools Business (“STB”)
Patent Team.
The STB Patent Team is responsible for:
• Providing
frontline patent counseling and planning to STB’s worldwide
organization working closely with the STB directors and business
managers
• Formulating and executing strategies relating to patent filing,
patent application prosecution, inbound patent licensing, inbound and
outbound technology or product licensing, patent asset acquisitions,
company mergers and acquisitions, and patent conflicts and litigations
support
• Understanding and organizing Microsoft’s growing world-wide patent
portfolio, including identifying and analyzing Microsoft patents that
relate to Microsoft products, competitive products and technologies,
and standards specifications, with a goal of maximizing the value of
the patent portfolio to Microsoft, conduct patent landscapes in
relevant technical areas and analyze competitors’ patents
• Using STB’s patent portfolio to advance STB business objectives
The Patent Portfolio Manager is a crucial member in successfully
executing these responsibilities. The Patent Portfolio Manager
identifies and analyzes the Microsoft patents in key technology areas,
and drives the prosecution of these portfolios to accomplish identified
business needs. The Portfolio manager is also a key partner in use of
the key portfolios. The key technology patent portfolios to be managed
by the Patent Portfolio Manager include:
• Service Oriented Architecture
• Virtualization
• Database
• Web Server Platform
To manage the key portfolios, the Patent Portfolio Manager will work in the STB team to identify and classify Microsoft patents related to business priorities. The Patent Portfolio Manager will work closely with our outside counsel and vendors to drive patent prosecution of identified cases toward business goals and to develop competitive technology landscape analyses. The Patent Portfolio Manager will also partner with counseling attorneys in patent asset acquisitions, company mergers and acquisitions, and patent conflicts and litigations. To ensure an expanding work experience, the Patent Portfolio Manager may later take on the role of providing frontline patent counseling for a business unit.
Qualified candidates must have greater than 5 years experience as a patent attorney and intermediate or advanced knowledge of computer software technology. Good communication skills are essential to effectively work in a cross-group support function and effectively summarize complex technologies or legal issues. An enthusiasm for the STB business, protecting Microsoft’s Intellectual Property assets, and extracting value from our patent portfolios is desired.
